Gordon was a great guy and a good friend. I have never seen such a hard worker. If You wanted to see Gordon you needed to go to The Haven. I remember Mike Krull,Bob Stark, John Pierson and John Buermann would go to The Haven to see Gorden and have some food and beverages. He was always glad to see us. I also remembered bowling with Gordon in the league at St Mary's. He was a great bowler. My dad would pick Gorden and myself up and take Gordon home after bowling.Gordon will be greatly missed.
I really do appreciate this website more than ever since I stopped receiving the Post Dispatch. (Tired of all the negative news)
Thanks to Rick for maintaining this communication so I can learn of news about our classmates . Re: Gordon Beck, and Bill Davis.
When the announcement came that Gordy was terminal, in hospice and receiving visitors I went up to see him the next Saturday. Honestly did not know what to expect with the thought of his physical appearance which was confirmed as poor. However, he started initiating conversation when I began to ask him to recall some of the fun times we had in school. His Dad's tavern, the large Chrysler Imperial his Dad owned and we partied in, and his college fraternity escapades. We talked about his Pontiac Fiero in which I was familiar but he corrected me when , as I was telling him of the many unique features of the car I left out the aluminum engine. Gordy was still pretty sharp, and as we continued to talk he recalled much more. The visit concluded with John Buermann showing up with his wife and I bowed out and shook Gordy's hand not knowing it was the last time that I would see him. So glad I went!!
Bill Davis who was also a friend of Gordy and passed last year had a similar sense of humor to Gordy. That is what I enjoyed about being around them both because they somewhat fed off of each other. Classic! Both enjoyed band and their respective instruments and of course bowling. Never went bowling with them but both Bill and Gordy used to come watch the football and baseball games that I was involved with. Good friends right?
It is a shame that I let time and all of its minutia put distance between us as well as some of you but family, work, and other group activities do that. Not an excuse. Hopefully they forgave me for that.
With attrition taking toll on our ranks I hope to be a little more involved with class activities in the future. This year was my last year coaching select girls' volleyball as I have for the past 30 years and I am winding down the outside interests. I would like to thank Bill and Gordy for some great memories and friendship. Hope to see more of all my fellow Dragons.
